she’s magical, so talented and having found a unique voice at such a young age. she absolutely seems like a wood nymph, definitely evokes feelings of the woods. or is it just that this style of music doesn’t reach this height, or this audience, and its novelty is so titillating to virgin ears?
when i first heard her voice, i thought it was odd. kaity was enamored of her, a bunch of them went to see joanna play in portland, and it was the event of the year. “i wish you could’ve been there,” kaity said later. it was only after that flutter of excitement that i acquired the album, and immersed myself in “Emily,” and it’s the greatest 10+ minute song i know. i just love it. i love when a long song is so good that i don’t want it to end. it’s a grand epic, a story that weaves without noticeable cadences.
admittedly i haven’t followed her very much. i get stuck on songs, and beyond “Emily” i haven’t gotten much further than that. today i noticed she isn’t on Spotify (came across her criticism of it), but is on Apple music. her marrying a comedian makes her even more intriguing – maybe more human, less elfin. oh, but this song (i’m listening to it for the second time in a row – that’s nearly half an hour of one song)
