Ice Machine

i have a renewed love for this song. when did it start? earlier in the year, i had my own synth pop renaissance after a brief yet intense Pet Shop Boys obsession. somehow i landed on Ice Machine, and i found the Rokysopp cover on youtube. that guest singer’s voice irks me, but i can’t get over the fact that they chose this obscure track to cover – impressive. and hearing this song immersed in stark euro cheese is fascinating. i just love the guy’s Norwegian accent trudging through like he’s in Front 242. (i know, they’re not Norwegian)

i also love the imperfection of this live version. the synth is a bit off beat in the beginning, right before the vocals kick in.

i am reading a Depeche Mode book – it’s not quite a biography, but more of a compilation of interviews and quotes that some mega-fan pasted together, bless them. i was intrigued to find that Vince didn’t put much stock into his lyrics. they were mostly just nonsense. and here i am getting all tangled up about what does this mean!
resurrect as a feeling from my window of a past reunion
it can seem so intense, but it’s really just genius sounding bullshit.

i’m still working through my feelings about Vince Clarke. is this the most ridiculous crap ever? i’m like coming to grips with the realization that i held a grudge against him for eons, and that i’m ready to forgive him. for leaving the band. i mean, they were on the brink of more success (which they were able to achieve regardless). it just wasn’t meant to be, sure. he wouldn’t have been happy.

it always comes back to this: i resent that he is the one who created such mystifying masterpieces as Ice Machine. New Life. Any Second Now. beautiful stuff.
